"FDJ WINS A STAGE AT THE DUNKIRK 4 DAY""
The Dunkirk Four Day actually lasted one stage longer than its title implies. Five days or racing covering almost 900 kilometers of roads in the Pas de Calais region in the north of France. Saturday's hilly stage crossed the Mt. Cassel, Hills of Flanders Artois and Boulogne. It was on this last stage of the 56th anniversary of this event that Benedict Vaugrenard of FDJ won the stage after a long break. He seized his chance from his breakaway companions in the last three kilometers and held them off for the stage win. "I didn't ever question myself, I just went without looking back."
The stage ended with some laps through Dunkirk that allowed the break to build a 14 minute lead. The peloton did not react quickly enough to reclaim the time that the break established. A few riders in the break tried to attack without success. Finally Vaugrenard went and there was no bringing him back. The peloton finished close behind and Martin Elmiger of AG2R retained his lead to take the overall classification.
